THOMAS C. ADAM was born in Deadwood,
South Dakota, February 16, 1935, and
was raised in Lead, South Dakota.
Following graduation from the
University of South Dakota (B.S.,
1960; LLB, 1962), he was admitted to
the South Dakota Bar and joined the
firm in August, 1962. He is also
admitted to practice before the
federal courts at the trial and
appellate levels. While in law
school he was a member of the Phi
Delta Phi legal fraternity, a member
of the Board of Editors of the South
Dakota Law Review, and a member of
the Appellate Moot Court.
Mr. Adam is a member of the State
Bar of South Dakota, having served
as a member of the State Board of
Bar Examiners from 1981 to 1991 with
his last six years of service as its
chairman. He served as a member of
the State Judicial Qualifications
Commission from 1967 to 1979. He is
a Fellow of the American College of
Trust and Estate Counsel and a
member of the American Bar
Association. Over the years Mr. Adam
has participated as a speaker and
lecturer as a part of the State
Bar's Continuing Legal Education
Program. Active in many aspects of
banking and commercial law, he has
been directly involved in the
legislative effort necessary for the
enactment of various uniform laws,
including the Uniform Commercial
Code. He has served as general
counsel to the South Dakota Gaming
Commission, the South Dakota
Building Authority, and other
government agencies. Also Mr. Adam
has been very active in community
affairs, including service as
president of the Public Library
Building Corporation and service as
the head of the fund raising effort
to first construct the Oahe YMCA.
Also, he served on the board and as
president of the South Dakota Easter
Seals Association and also served
two terms on the board of the
National Easter Seals Association.
PROFESSIONAL EMPHASIS AND
EXPERIENCE
Mr. Adam has a general practice
emphasizing business, corporation,
banking, real estate, and probate
law. He serves as General Counsel to
the South Dakota Bankers Association
and the South Dakota Dental
Association and represents them
before the Legislature. He has
extensive experience in real estate
and probate law and is involved with
mineral law. He has completed bond
issues for state authorities,
municipal governments, and school
districts. Mr. Adam is also active
in the areas of lender liability and
creditor bankruptcy law.
